TWIN-SAFE at the 38th ICTCT Conference: Strengthening Research and International Cooperation

Members of the TWIN-SAFE project consortium participated in the 38th ICTCT Conference – International Cooperation on Theories and Concepts in Traffic Safety, held on 22–23 October 2026 in Zagreb, Croatia. The conference brought together international researchers, experts and professionals to exchange knowledge and discuss current challenges and innovations in road safety.

As part of the scientific programme, the following extended abstract developed within the TWIN-SAFE project was presented: “Behavioral adaptation to automated speed enforcement: a study using naturalistic smartphone-based data from car drivers and motorcyclists”, authored by Dario Babić, Marija Ferko, Bernard Kosovec, Darko Babić, Tom Brijs and Ali Pirdavani.

The ongoing research investigates how car drivers and motorcyclists respond to automated speed enforcement using naturalistic driving data collected through a smartphone application. The study examines speeding behaviour and acceleration and braking patterns near speed cameras, contributing to a better understanding of road user behaviour and the potential safety implications of automated enforcement.

During the conference, the TWIN-SAFE team presented the project’s objectives, activities and achievements, highlighting its contribution to advancing road safety research and strengthening international scientific cooperation.

A dedicated session highlighted the development and research capabilities of the Centre of Excellence for Road Traffic Safety (CERTS) at FTTS. One of the key highlights was the official presentation of the joint road safety Knowledge Centre and the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the University of Zagreb Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences, Hasselt University and Lund University. The MoU, signed in 2026, establishes a framework for long-term scientific, educational and technical cooperation, extending the partnership beyond the duration of the TWIN-SAFE project.

Participation in ICTCT 2026 provided a valuable opportunity to share TWIN-SAFE achievements with the international research community and demonstrate how the project’s activities are contributing to sustainable scientific cooperation and long-term improvements in road safety.
