On Tuesday March 4th, we hosted another workshop, this time focusing on Road Safety Audits (RSA). Led by Leonid Ljubotina, Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences, this session provided understanding of the RSA process, its key differences from other safety assessments, and its critical role in improving road infrastructure.

Oksanaโs research is about utilizing microscopic data from video recordings to analyze road user behavior, with a special focus on pedestrians and cyclists in urban settings. Her work addresses two crucial areas: Gaining deeper insights into the subtle, dynamic behaviors of road users in everyday traffic and expanding the Surrogate Measures of Safety (SMoS) approachย to enhanceย proactive traffic safety analysis.

โAssessment of influential factors on motorcyclists’ safety on rural roads โ Behavioral Characteristics Among Motorcyclistsโ
Marija Ferko is a Cotutelle PhD student at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences, and Hasselt University, Faculty of Engineering Technology. Her research specializes in identifying factors influencing motorcycle rider safety, focusing on rural roads. Over the past few years, Marija has been actively engaged in expert and research projects centered on motorcyclists, exploring rider behavior and the impact of road infrastructure on their safety. Her work reflects a commitment to advancing knowledge and developing practical solutions to enhance motorcycle rider safety.
This seminar will focus on findings from the part of Marija’s doctoral research project related to behavioral characteristics obtained from an extensive survey conducted among motorcyclists.

TWIN-SAFE Online PhD Seminar Series - Fourth Session Recap
On Friday, December 13th, 2024, we successfully hosted the fourth session of our TWIN-SAFE online PhD seminar series, bringing together PhD students to explore innovations in traffic safety and transport systems.
This session featured Waqas Ahmed from Hasselt University, who presented his research on:

TWIN-SAFE Workshop in Lund, Sweden: Strengthening Road Safety and Research Collaboration!
Last week, consortium partners of the TWIN-SAFE project came together in Lund, Sweden, for a three-day workshop hosted by Lund University.
Day 1 – Participants were introduced to K2, Swedenโs national centre for research and education on public transport, and toured the laboratories at Lund Universityโs Campus Helsingborg.
Day 2 – A hands-on workshop on grant writing and funding opportunities in Horizon Europe guided participants through the process of developing competitive research proposalsโfrom brainstorming ideas to finalizing applications.
Day 3 – The final day showcased impactful research and practical solutions in road safety, including:
– Surrogate safety measures developed at Lund University
– Insights from 15 years of driving simulation research at Hasselt University
– Innovative post-crash solutions like smart guiderails implemented in Croatia
– Lessons from AfroSAFE on road safety infrastructure management in low – and middle-income countries
– Practical applications of the Safe System Approach from Belgium, Croatia, and Sweden

“Enhancing Road Safety through UAV captured Aerial Footage and Deep Learning: Object Detection, Risk Prediction, and Real-time Analysis.โ
Waqas Ahmed is a researcher at the Transportation Research Institute (IMOB), specializing in the exciting fields of state-of-the-art computer vision and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to enhance road safety. He has a background in remote sensing and geographic information systems, which provides a valuable geographical perspective to his research.
This seminar will focus on visual computing methods for implementing surrogate safety measures. It will begin with an overview of the challenges faced by UAVs and data collection, especially in relation to personal data protection regulations. The discussion will further explore the technical intricacies of visual computing for accurate vehicle trajectory estimation and localization.
