TWIN-SAFE Online PhD Seminar Series - Fourth Session Recap

On Friday, December 13th, 2024, we successfully hosted the fourth session of our TWIN-SAFE online PhD seminar series, bringing together PhD students to explore innovations in traffic safety and transport systems.

This session featured Waqas Ahmed from Hasselt University, who presented his research on:

“Enhancing Road Safety through UAV-Captured Aerial Footage and Deep Learning: Object Detection, Risk Prediction, and Real-Time Analysis.”

TWIN-SAFE Workshop in Lund, Sweden: Strengthening Road Safety and Research Collaboration!

Last week, consortium partners of the TWIN-SAFE project came together in Lund, Sweden, for a three-day workshop hosted by Lund University.

Day 1 – Participants were introduced to K2, Sweden’s national centre for research and education on public transport, and toured the laboratories at Lund University’s Campus Helsingborg.

Day 2 – A hands-on workshop on grant writing and funding opportunities in Horizon Europe guided participants through the process of developing competitive research proposals—from brainstorming ideas to finalizing applications.

Day 3 – The final day showcased impactful research and practical solutions in road safety, including:
– Surrogate safety measures developed at Lund University
– Insights from 15 years of driving simulation research at Hasselt University
– Innovative post-crash solutions like smart guiderails implemented in Croatia
– Lessons from AfroSAFE on road safety infrastructure management in low – and middle-income countries
– Practical applications of the Safe System Approach from Belgium, Croatia, and Sweden

Join us for the fourth online PhD seminar in our Road Safety Research series!

We’re excited to continue our TWIN-SAFE PhD seminar series, sharing research focused on traffic safety and transport systems. This fourth seminar features Waqas Ahmed from Hasselt University, presenting on:

“Enhancing Road Safety through UAV captured Aerial Footage and Deep Learning: Object Detection, Risk Prediction, and Real-time Analysis.”

Waqas Ahmed is a researcher at the Transportation Research Institute (IMOB), specializing in the exciting fields of state-of-the-art computer vision and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to enhance road safety. He has a background in remote sensing and geographic information systems, which provides a valuable geographical perspective to his research.

This seminar will focus on visual computing methods for implementing surrogate safety measures. It will begin with an overview of the challenges faced by UAVs and data collection, especially in relation to personal data protection regulations. The discussion will further explore the technical intricacies of visual computing for accurate vehicle trajectory estimation and localization.

TWIN-SAFE Workshop in Hasselt, Belgium:
Human Factors & Civic University!

We’re thrilled to share highlights from the successful TWIN-SAFE workshops held with our consortium partners in Belgium on the 29th and 30th of October. Hosted at Hasselt University, these sessions brought together experts from Hasselt University, Lund University and Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences (FTTS) to foster collaboration and learning, focusing on road safety and community engagement.

Day 1 focused on the Safe Systems Approach, covering core theories, concepts, and real-world applications in human factors and road safety. This approach underpins our commitment to enhancing FTTS’s expertise in contemporary road safety strategies. Through workshops, training, and exchanges, we’re building a foundation of knowledge and skills that bridges our institutions.

Day 2 introduced the Civic University concept, led by Hasselt University, guiding FTTS and Lund University in creating a civic mission that strengthens ties between academia and society. This collaboration aims to increase internationalization, expand project management skills, and encourage entrepreneurial thinking within FTTS.

Join us for the third online PhD seminar in our Road Safety Research series

We’re excited to continue our TWIN-SAFE PhD seminar series, sharing cutting-edge research focused on traffic safety and transport systems. This third seminar features Zhankun Chen from Lund University, Transport and Road division, Faculty of Engineering, presenting on:
“Feasible framework of Surrogate Measure of Safety (SMoS), what, why, and how?”

In this seminar, Zhankun will explore the proactive evaluation of traffic safety using SMoS, focusing on traffic conflicts. His research delves into a statistical approach to traffic conflict analysis.

Seminar will begin with an overview of SMoS and its theoretical and practical implications. Following that, Zhankun will reflect on the limitations of the current SMoS paradigm. The discussion will conclude with a proposed paradigm shift in SMoS formulation, along with a new prediction method based on this shift. Mladen, an assistant at the Department of Intelligent Transportation Systems, will discuss his PhD research on adaptive traffic signal control using 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 (𝗔𝗜). His work focuses on the application of dimensionality reduction techniques and 𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 (𝗥𝗟) to control signalized intersections. Additionally, the seminar will cover the concept of 𝗺𝗶𝘅𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀 and the integration of connected vehicles technology with intersection control. This seminar offers a valuable opportunity to gain insights into reinforcement learning-based traffic signal control.

TWIN-SAFE online PhD Seminar Series Kickoff!

We are excited to share that on Friday, September 20th, we successfully launched the first session of the TWIN-SAFE online PhD Seminar Series!

Our first presenter, Muhammad Wisal Khattak from Hasselt University, delivered an insightful presentation on his PhD research titled: “Development and Calibration of Safety Performance Functions for Urban Roads in Flanders, Belgium.”

Wisal, a civil engineer with a focus on transportation safety, presented his work on crash prediction models using advanced statistical methods. His research delves into the development of Safety Performance Functions (SPFs), which help identify high-risk areas, or hotspots, on urban roads by analyzing crash data, traffic volumes, and road characteristics. He also explained how Bayesian models can enhance the accuracy of crash predictions, particularly in areas with limited data, offering valuable insights into improving road safety in urban environments.

Start of the online PhD seminar series

We are announcing the start of the online PhD seminar series as part of the TWIN-SAFE project, a collaboration between Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences University of Zagreb, Hasselt University and Lund University.

Three PhD students from each partner will present their research in the field of transportation and road safety. The first seminar will take place on 20th September, and you can join us by registering for the event! This event is open to PhD students in transportation and road safety field!

Fourth Road Safety Summer School Successfully Completed

From September 2nd to 11th, the international Road Safety Summer School was held at the Scientific and Educational Campus Borongaj in Zagreb, Croatia. This prestigious program, successfully organized for the fourth consecutive year by the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences of the University of Zagreb, has become a popular international platform for education and the exchange of experiences in the field of road safety.

The summer school program is designed to offer participants comprehensive and expert lectures on advanced concepts and elements of road traffic safety. The goal is to expand the knowledge and competencies of graduate and postgraduate students, as well as professionals in road engineering and safety. The lectures are thematically organized around key traffic safety factors: human, vehicles, roads, and their surrounding environment.

In addition to experts from the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences, leading global experts in road safety field gave lectures. Among them were renowned figures like Brendan Halleman from the European Investment Bank, Antonio Avenoso from the European Transport Safety Council, Harald Mosbock from Swarco, Oscar Oviedo-Trespalacios from Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands), and Ali Pirdavani and Kris Brijs from Hasselt University (Belgium), as well as Carmelo D’Agostino from Lund University (Sweden).

This year’s summer school gathered 25 participants from 18 countries around the world. Along with several participants from Croatia, there were attendees from Ethiopia, Cameroon, Jordan, Egypt, Kazakhstan, India, the Netherlands, Serbia, Greece, Russia, Albania, Lebanon, and other countries.

It is important to note that, as of May 2024, the “Road Safety Summer School” became part of the European project “TWIN-SAFE: Advancing Road Safety Through Twinning,” co-financed by the Horizon Europe program and coordinated by the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences.

Kick-off Meeting for the TWIN-SAFE Project:
Advancing Road Safety Through Twinning

On May 29th and 30th, the Kick-off meeting for the TWIN-SAFE project took place, marking the beginning of a 36-month collaboration between the University of Zagreb’s Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences (FTTS), Hasselt University in Belgium, and Lund University in Sweden.

The primary aim of the project is to enhance the road safety research capabilities at the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences through partnerships with the mentioned institutions. The overarching vision is to establish FTTS as a center of excellence in multidisciplinary road safety research, education, and innovation. The project activities will be implemented in close collaboration with the Centre of Excellence for Road Traffic Safety (CERTS) established in 2023 at FTTS.

The project is funded by the European Commission under the HORIZON Coordination and Support Actions, call HORIZON-WIDERA-2023-ACCESS-02. The project coordinator is Asst. Prof. Dario Babić, Ph.D.

Road Safety Summer School 2024 applications are open

Applications for Road Safety Summer School 2024 are open! The program takes place in Zagreb, Croatia and it is organised by Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences. The goal of Road Safety Summer School is to provide broad and expert training related to advanced concepts and elements of road safety and thus increase the knowledge and competence of participants.

Summer school will last 10 days – from 2 September to 11 September and during that time, world-renowned experts from the field will introduce participants to the state-of-the-art findings related to the main factors of road safety: the human factor, the road and its environment, and the vehicle factor.

The total duration of the program is 50 hours (1 hour = 60 min). Master’s and Ph.D. students will receive 2 ECTS credits after completing all the planned activities. All participants will receive a certificate of successful completion.

We are inviting all interested road safety enthusiasts to apply for Road Safety Summer school this year.
